Bower has verbally clashed with the Trump administration over its handling of protests. The mayor complained about the federal weight-hands response and called for the elimination of out-of-state National Guard forces.

He said their differences highlighted the need for D.C. to be state and have more control over affairs. They can also point to the fact that Trump is deeply unpopular in the district, where Hillary Clinton won about 90% of the vote in the 2016 presidential election. D.C. While he's not talking about painted murals, Trump continued his attack on Bowser friday in tweets.

Mayor Muriel Bowser holds press conference amid protests On Thursday, as the protests remained peaceful, Bowser ended the curfew and was charged after people ruined the building and broke into business over the weekend and Monday. A large demonstration was expected in the city on Saturday, and the city had not yet decided whether the curfew would be activated.

The mayor tweeted a letter from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who wrote to the president to express alarm that peaceful protesters were facing the weight of armed federal agencies and officers, many of them with their identities and institutions obscured.

There were thousands of members of the National Guard, along with officers and agents from various deployed agencies around Washington in case of civil unrest.
