There are at least 1,267 cases of coronavirus in the United States, according to state and local health officials and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Seventy cases are returned from overseas, such as citizens who have been evacuated from China or the cruise ship Diamond Princess in Japan.

1,197 cases have been detected and confirmed on U.S. soil in 43 states and Washington, DC.

These figures include suspected positive cases - meaning that the patient has tested positive in a public health laboratory and is still facing confirmation from the CDC.

The death toll in the United States now stands at 38 after the death of another patient in Washington State.

Europe seems largely blind to President Trump's announcement today that the United States will travel from 26 European countries.

Several European ambassadors in Washington told CNN that they did not know this was going to happen, even though they had been in contact with the government in recent days.

An ambassador in Washington said there was "no indication" that Trump would go as far as he did, while another spokesman said German officials had no advance warning that this would happen.

"We knew that something came from Europe (more restrictive travel advice), but not so radically," the Belgian ambassador told CNN. "What is incomprehensible is the exception for the United Kingdom and the absence of national measures [at the national level]."
The Trump administration told ambassadors after the announcement that several European ambassadors were expressing clarity as they struggled to digest what the new measures meant. They had received calls from the State Department after the announcement - but they "don't have answers to our questions yet," said an ambassador.

State Department officials say they don't know exactly what Trump would deploy because several options were on the table.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Australia's foreign minister less than five hours before Mr. Trump's speech -- and gave no indication of the announcement coming tonight, according to a source familiar with the meeting.

Pompeo acknowledged that things would continue to be painful over the next six weeks and more and more.
